We had our first snow of the season yesterday, and I’m already three days into my first cold. It hit me Sunday as we were making our way back from visiting JP’s family in Ohio. Sore throat, dripping nose, head ache … you know – overall signs of craptastic feeling to come. With yesterday’s first snow came some rain at first and then temps dropped quickly and rain turned into snow and with the cold air coming it, turned into ice. The commute home from work was ok only because it was Veteran’s Day so traffic was light….but I almost dove right into a ditch coming off of a bridge on my way to the highway which made me freak out a little bit.
With the first snow there are always tons and tons of Facebook updates on the weather – like people are shocked that it’s November in the midwest and it’s cold and we have precipitation. Sorry to tell you folks, we have 6 more months of this fun-party. This time of year is crazy. We’re a few weeks away from Halloween and the official close of summer and we’re inching out of Fall weather with the colors changing from bright reds and yellows to dreary browns and grays. We’re resistant to the cold weather that’s inevitable and some of us are terrified to drive in the winter. Plus, it gets dark super early now and I hate that.
This past weekend, we stopped at some small shops in Ohio to look for Christmas “gear”. JP wants to start building our family decorations for the holidays and figured we could pick up some cute and original items from some of these shops. The first place we stopped at was Wade Gardens in Mansfield, OH which has a cute gift shop filled with tons of fall and Christmas items for your home and garden! We had fun checking out their decked out Christmas trees and their fun signs around the shop. They also had some “wine” candles that were named after different wine types and recycled out of old wine bottles (the containers not the actual candle part). Here are some cute items we spotted at the shops:
See my owl tree? Totally swooned over it. All of the decorations were “woodsy” and were filled with multiple types of owls. I. loved. it. After Wade Gardens, we made our way to another shop called Possum Run Greenhouse that was a little bigger than the first and had a lot of items but the Wade Gardens had more of a cozy shop and cuter items. We picked up a cute snow man and a little wooden sign along with some other little items that I’m really excited about.
I was excited to see so many owl decorations. Seriously, I could become that crazy bird lady for every holiday or occasion – but I think JP would kill me. I loved this little guy below, but sadly we didn’t scoop him up because we aren’t having a tree this year since we’ll be in Ohio for the majority of Christmas week. Just going to do simple decorations around the apartment, instead.
I’m not going to lie, though, as much as I hate the biting temperatures and the shorter days, I am in love with Christmas music and bright white lights. Something about winter is very comforting. Now, if we can only get people to drive better, I would be set!
How are you decorating your house this holiday season?
